My favorite app is iSH it’s really the power back to the user. It’s not perfect nor anything on mobile, in the sense it lacks resources and background longevity. There is a command that helps it be sticky (To start backgrounding: Run “cat \/dev\/location > \/dev\/null &” ) I’ve had success with torrenting and IRC. In today’s mobile landscape an app like Brave is useful even though I guess it’s only safari with some form of overlay. I am not well versed however it is wonderful for background audio within youtube. Ublock Origin Lite is an obvious winner however I sometimes miss adguard pro which now i do with a combination of UBO lite and Nextdns profile. The profile is another powerful tool being able to build email profiles or in the case of Nextdns a dns profile for cellular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What I like about iSH is the amount of alpine versions that can be imported. Each one becomes whatever it is I want to accomplish so I have a version for browsing with links or lynx(last I tried only one is working well) there is a version for SSH, another for experimenting. For email there is another app altogether EMclient. Its a little odd of an app but Steve Gibson recommended it. Odd in the sense of the owners, as in you are handing your credentials over to them and it doesn’t seem to explain how its treated. I used it because I was playing around with BIMI and they used to be able to display my BIMI. However the most recent editions as I ditched it for a bit haven’t been able to display my BIMI. So I’ll ditch it soon but what I did enjoy is there allowing an iOS user to display header source and mail source in a way most others don’t; this could be my lack of knowing other apps do this. The EM client reminds me of the tailscale* style of authentication, you are literally handing your credentials to someone to sign in on your behalf or so it seems. I could be ignorant to EM clients handling of these credentials and I’ll check myself if so. However with tailscale everyone went nuts about it and to me it seems like a gimmicky way to have someone grab your credentials. I’m sure if it can be pointed out how the auth works I could be mistaken but why not just use wireshark. Speaking of wireshark it is another app that is handy but handy in a way that 1.1.1.1 cloudflares DNS app is handy. VPN’s unless I am reaching into my network for something like a cluttered closet is useless to me as everyone knows whom you are the moment your Mac exchanges with the router. The one aspect of wireshark I like the most is the otherwise obfuscated port so unlike Openvpn there isn’t an open port. Although I have Openvpn as well for one lackey router.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The talk makes me remember the old app store days, I have always been against apps on the iOS device that was sorta the point of bringing over the browser on a mobile was the freedom to have choice and be able to surf in a way our PC brethren did. Sadly I downloaded a beer app on my first iphone just to show some non iphone user the power of idk what that was. Soon the app concept made me realize how it became a race war to infiltrate ones device and not even offer the power of what the web counterpart could do. All this probably took place as a battle due to adobe flash’s death. Now your average user just grabs apps like they are candy. I don’t mean to introduce a plethora of apps but a toolkit to supplement a mobile device. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
